Earlier this week, Apple hailed an impressive quarter for its App Store, with revenues up 29% year-on-year. It didn’t say anything about other iTunes Store content, but yesterday we got an idea why. Sales of music, video and other digital media on the company’s store fell by 4% during the last quarter – what VentureBeat notes is the third straight quarter of declining sales of digital media downloads. In truth, this isn’t a surprise to anyone who’s been following music industry figures in recent months: music is a big chunk of iTunes Store revenues, and music download sales have been in decline. Note, though, that while this has been going on, Apple has been taking a 30% cut of subscription revenues for Spotify, Pandora and other streaming music services charging with monthly in-app purchases through their iOS apps. It’s just that this revenue is filed under the App Store segment of its financials.
